ZEPHYR MAKES DEMANDS AND GEORGIA MAKES A LIST

She jolted awake, feeling disoriented. The tea was cold, the water was warm, and the sandwiches sat untouched. Zephyr was in the middle of the room watching her.

“Zephyr, you startled me,” she said. “Come on, come and say hello.” She made the little clicking sounds she used to call her cats, but he remained sitting.

“My goodness, you look . . .bigger.”

“I have grown.”

Georgia covered her face. “No, no, no, no!” She looked out through her fingers. “How are you talking to me? How do you know how?”

Zephyr did not reply.

Georgia sniffled a little but held in the exhausted crying that threatened. Her thumb throbbed.

“If you’re going to talk to me, then—why did you bite me?”

“Because I want you to pay attention. I want you to let me go.”

“What do you mean? To go outside?”

“Yes.”

“But you won’t stay on a lead.”

He glared. “Of course not.”

“Then, you might wander into traffic or get lost.”

“I am a cat. I don’t get lost.”

“But many cats are hit by cars every year.”

“Then I will be hit.”

“You can’t possibly want to be run over!”

“I want to go.” He flicked his tail. Georgia stared at it. Zephyr had a thick, plumed tail, but it was bigger than it had been. All of him was.

“How is it possible that you’ve grown so quickly! Again!” It wasn’t really a question; there was no good answer to such a thing. But he replied,

“I am a Norwegian Forest Cat. It is my nature to grow. But I am not done yet. And I must be in the forest. I must go.”

“Zephyr, I couldn’t just abandon you in a forest! That would be so cruel. You’d be lonely and hungry and—”

Zephyr gave her a pitying look and stalked away, his tail in the air.

Georgia made a new pot of tea and got a fresh glass of water and then settled down with the sandwiches and her notebook. She turned to a fresh page and wrote across the top: My ideal Greek voyage. She looked at the title and wrote under it, My cat is really talking to me. She underlined this three times, then crossed the whole thing out. It was bad enough it was happening, but worse to make it even more real by writing it down. She turned the page and started again.
